Safe children’s jewellery
I have been getting a lot of question about the reports on cadmium in children’s jewellery. Many people are asking what children’s jewellery is safe and what is not.
Children’s jewellery made of gold, sterling silver or stainless steel are safe. If the jewellery is made of plastic, wood, crystal or leather make sure that any painted or lacquered finishes are safe. If you are uncertain ask the store where you are purchasing it if they know. If they do not, or you have any doubts do not buy it or let your children wear or play with it.
At this time I would suggest you refrain from purchasing any baby rings, children’s bracelets, children’s pendants, baby or small children’s earrings that are made of any other metals. Especially if they come from China.
Do not buy any children’s jewellery of any kind from any dollar type stores. And while Wal-Mart has removed children’s jewellery from China from it’s shelves we do not know about other stores where this type of children’s jewellery is sold.
Be aware that many of the jewellery making kits also come from china, so if you are buying any look for kits or accessories that come from other countries.
You must also remember that children’s accessories such as hair clips, shoe and backpack clips can also contain cadmium and must be avoided at this time if they are made in China.
Your best bet if you are looking for inexpesive children’s jewellery right now is sterling silver, stainless steel (which is non allergenic) or jewellery made of resins, leather, silk or wood.
