Saftey tips for buying children’s jewellery

Posted on 9:42 am

Children’s jewellery is a wonderful gift idea. There are so many different types and styles of jewellery and you can find children’s jewellery from birth right up to late teens but there are things you must consider when purchasing jewellery for children.

Always buy jewellery that is age appropriate! For small children close fitting earings are safer than anyting that dangles. I would not recommend any type of chain or necklace for small children as they can easily be  choked by them. Consider children’s bracelets or baby rings. Make sure that the bracelets do not have any beads or charms that can come off. For children over seven this would not be a problem. Also be careful that there is no lead in the piece and that if it is made of leather or plastic that the finish on it is safe as small children often put things in their mouth.

Another thing I do not recomend is any kind of children’s jewellery under the age of ten to have their name on it. The exception to this would be a medical identification piece. For children older than ten years of age the main thing to look for is lead and nickle free jewellery. Lead in jewellery is poisonous and while nickle is not necessarily poisonous many people (not just children) are allergic to it. So keep these saftey tips in mind when purchasing children’s jewellery and if you are not sure about a piece ask the vendor questions. If they do not have the answers for you I would consider another piece (or another vendor!).
