Safe children’s jewellery

Posted on 4:55 pm

Many people have been asking me what children’s jewellery is safe.  With the recent news coming out that many children’s jewellery pieces from China have high levels of cadmium in them, people are scared.  They are uncertain which children’s jewellery pieces are safe.

Children’ jewellery made of gold, sterling silver, stainless steel or platinum are all safe for children to wear.  It does not matter if it is a baby ring, children’s bracelet, children’s necklace  children’s earrings or pendant, any piece in the aforementioned metals is safe.

The problem is with inexpensive children’s jewellery coming out of China.  Wal-mart has pulled all of their  children’s jewellery off it’s shelves.  Do not purchase any children’s jewellery from any dollar type stores as much of thier jewellery comes from China.  I would recommend that for the time being you do not buy any inexpensive children’s jewellery at all.

You also need to be aware that the cadmium can be in many other children’s accessories such as children’s hair pins, shoe and backpack charms.  Any type of inexpensive medal especially coming from China should be avoided until such time as the government has put a stop to cadmium being used in jewellery.

If you are looking for inexpensive children’s jewellery you can find it in metals such as sterling silver, stainless steel ( is non allergenic ), crystal or even wood or bamboo.

Be aware also that children’s jewellery making kits can also have cadmium in it.  When purchasing these kits look to see what country they come from.  Also you can buy individual segments  to make your own kits, these also can have cadmium in them.  If you are unsure ask the store manager.  If they can not tell you refrain from purchasing it.
